As the Chicago Bears head coaching search continues, John DeFilippo is the name that many see as the favorite to land the job

The Chicago Bears are in the midst of a long search for their next head coach. Ryan Pace’s job is very clearly on the line with this decision. While Pace and the Bears still have interviews coming in the following week, the early reports out of Bears camp is that the interview with John DeFilippo went very well, and the team views him as a serious head coaching candidate.

It is still worth noting familiar faces in Pete Carmichael and Steve Wilks could not interview yet, and both could change things dramatically. However, the biggest news to come from how impressive his interview was is that DeFilippo would be willing to retain Vic Fangio as the defensive coordinator.

This is a huge development. It also shows the understanding and maturity of the young DeFilippo to know how smart it would be to turn the defense over to consistency of Fangio.

There is speculation that Fangio would leave if he did not get the head coaching job, and his views on DeFilippo may be different than DeFilippos views on him.

Still, so far, Fangio has yet to have any other team request to interview him for a head coaching job. The Cincinnati Bengals were denied the chance to interview Fangio, but it was for a defensive coordinator position.

No offense to the Bengals, but that would be a bad career move for Fangio.

DeFilippo is a quarterback guy. He brings great energy. He has a better resume than his offensive coordinator in Philadelphia and clearly has knowledge of X’s and O’s.

More from Bear Goggles On

The Chicago Bears should absolutely hire John DeFilippo. Vic Fangio should absolutely stick around as the defensive coordinator. This could be the move that Bears fans have waited years for to come true. Bring him home, Pace. Hire John DeFilippo.
