The latest report now has Vic Fangio staying on as the Chicago Bears Defensive Coordinator.

He’s in, he’s out, he’s in, he’s out, and now, he’s in.

This week has been a bit of a roller coaster for Chicago Bears’ fans as they wait the fate on popular defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. After reports seemed to be solidifying last night that Fangio was waiting out to see if he would be able to join Pat Shurmur if he got a head coaching gig, now it seems that Fangio is ready to come back to the Windy City.

This is a big piece of news for Matt Nagy and his staff. It was paramount for Nagy to have a veteran defensive coordinator that could basically be the head coach of the defense while Nagy focused on developing Mitch Trubisky, modernizing the offense, and getting his feet wet as a first year head coach.

It’s safe to assume that several of Fangio’s defensive assistants will also return, but the Bears now have their main assistants locked in with Fangio, offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich and Special Teams Coordinator Chris Tabor.

The Bears were the first team to strike with their head coach and were able to put together a nice staff because of it. Now that the Fangio wait is over, you can expect the rest of the team’s assistant coaches to be named pretty quickly.

It wouldn’t have been the end of the world if the Bears’ lost Fangio, as long as they replaced him with a solid DC and there were a couple available, but now the Bears know they have continuity with the defense and will give Fangio the keys to keep building what he’s done over the past three seasons.
