Should the Chicago Bears extend Tom Compton, or let him walk?

Tom Compton started five games for the Chicago Bears in 2017. Will he even be on the roster in 2018? Should be the Chicago Bears re-sign him or let him go.

Stay

What is funny about Compton starting so often is that he had to start at guard, not tackle. Compton was signed as a player who could play both, but his preferred, and best position is tackle. However, it was injuries to Kyle Long and Josh Sitton that pushed him into the lineup. It obviously did not go too well. A backup in a position he is not comfortable in is a tough ask. However, the team gets Eric Kush back this year. If Compton can just slide into the backup tackle role again, why not let him stick around. If disaster strikes he has more experience than anyone they would sign anyway and can play four positions.

It can be argued that Bradley Sowell is a better backup tackle than Compton. One of the two likely would not have made the team if Kush was healthy. It would be interesting to see whose fate would have been significantly different in that reality. Stil, that does mean the team is going to decide on the two at some point. Will it be in camp? Will it be this offseason? If it is this offseason, Compton is the more likely to not be retained. It is not like he is a prized tackle either, and he could go into the summer unsigned.
