Is Aaron Colvin a product of a great defensive team or a must sign for the Chicago Bears after a big 2017 season.

Aaron Colvin had a big season. He finished in the top five in yards per target allowed and was the most underrated piece of the Jacksonville Jaguars defense. However, the Jaguars are strapped for cash and if there were a piece that the team would have to move on from it would likely be their slot cornerback. Should the Chicago Bears pursue Aaron Colvin?

Sign

While he is a restricted free agent, Bryce Callahan is not signed on for next season. Colvin would be a slight upgrade from Callaghan and likely will not cost much more. This would be a nice little upgrade in the slot cornerback position. The Chicago Bears have plenty of cap space, so spending a bit more in this area is not going to kill them. At the same time, upgrading in the slot is going to show.

Pass

It is not like Bryce Callahan was bad in the slot, in fact, he was good. The difference in cash between the two would have to only be minor. Colvin is likely an upgrade, but it is not a substantial one. The team has plenty of other needs, including outside cornerback. The team should feel more comfortable in the long term about Callahan than Prince Amukamara and should prioritize Callahan. That would leave Colvin as a secondary priority for the Chicago Bears, and likely a player going elsewhere.
