Block or Not: Kyle Fuller

CHICAGO, IL - NOVEMBER 16: Kyle Fuller
CHICAGO, IL - NOVEMBER 16: Kyle Fuller

Kyle Fuller had his best season as a pro, what does that mean for his future in Chicago?

A year ago, every Chicago Bears fan would have laughed at even having this discussion. Does Kyle Fuller fit into the Bears’ long term plans? A year ago, that answer was an obvious no. Fuller had two very up and down years in 2014 and 2015, and let’s be honest, they were mostly down.

Fuller followed that up with an injury that kept him out all of the 2016 season where his desire to actually recover and play was brought into question. When camp opened for the 2017 season, many expected Fuller to be released or dumped for a 6th or 7th round pick.

Fuller made the team and the Bears started him off behind Prince Amukamara and Marcus Cooper. It didn’t take more than a few games to realize that Fuller was light years better than Cooper. It wasn’t before midseason where the rumblings started that perhaps the Bears should keep Kyle Fuller beyond 2017, by late season it was important to do so and by season’s end it was such a must that the franchise tag has now been discussed.

That’s how impressive Fuller was this season. He was the Bears best cover corner without question and also did a solid job coming up against the run. Most of the season, Fuller played like a true shutdown corner.

The Bears have had an opportunity to franchise Fuller and haven’t done it yet but are aggressively trying to sign him to a multi-year contract. The Bears have a few more days in the exclusive window to sign Fuller or at least tag him. The Bears clearly want Fuller back and rumors are that Fuller wants to stay in Chicago. The two sides just have to come together on a price.

The Bears have made it clear exactly what they think of Fuller after his 2017 season and they have no plans of letting him sneak out the door.
