The Bears have a new kicker, his name is Cody Parkey.

Chicago Bears fans haven’t been able to sleep at night over the problems this team has had at kicker over the last few years. Now, while a team that can barely get out of its own way has a lot more issues than kicker, the sky has been falling ever since Ryan Pace decided to let Robbie Gould go and sign Josh Sitton with the cash they saved.

Since then, kickers such as Connor Barth, Cairo Santos and Mike Nugent have donned the navy and orange and have not performed very well. With the moves the Bears are making, clearly, Ryan Pace thinks it’s time to complete and no longer time to rebuild. If you are going to compete, you need a good kicker. It was time to address the issue and the Bears did just that.

This is a nice, smart signing by Pace. Parkey has been largely an under-the-radar kicker since coming into the league, but he’s performed well.

Parkey had an excellent rookie campaign with the Philadelphia Eagles that resulted in a spot on the Pro Bowl team. In Parkey’s second year, he suffered a groin injury and the Eagles chose to go another direction after the season. Parkey’s third year was with the Cleveland Browns where his production dipped (whose doesn’t?), and last year Parkey was in Miami where he drilled 21 of 23 field goals.

Not only is Parkey an accurate kicker, he can boot from long distance as well, he’s a career 6 of 7 from beyond 50 yards. Parkey should be able to perform well as a member of the Bears’ special teams and should be able to solidify a position that has been a question mark the last few years.

The Bears continue to revamp the team. They are working to keep together a defense that started coming together as a strong unit last season and are now adding pieces to an offense that could make the Bears an actual threat to score, something that didn’t happen very often under John Fox.
