The Chicago Bears are bringing Benny Cunningham back for one more season

We asked if the Chicago Bears were going to add a running back soon and within days, we got an answer. In a sensible decision, the Chicago Bears brought back Benny Cunningham.

The deal has yet to be announced, but is likely a low money, one year deal. The fact of the matter is that the Bears were going to head into the draft with just three running backs. Essentially if they did not plan on drafting a running back, they were going to be scrambling post draft to put a couple of names together.

While it is just the number four running back, going into a season with just Jordan Howard, Tarik Cohen and Taquan Mizzell is not a legitimate group. One injury to either of the top two backs really deflates anything this group has.

Cunningham gives them depth and the most experienced name of the group. He brings special teams ability and will likely return kicks. But most of all, he provides flexibility, and gives the Bears the chance to pick and choose their spot to draft a depth running back, knowing that if they do not draft one, they can dip into the undrafted free agent pool and be just fine. They do not have to get priority undrafted free agents now.

Still, given the profile of many of these backs, expect the next running back signed to be in the variety of a power back.
