12. player. 57. . Defensive Back. Florida State. Derwin James

If you examine the Pace profile, the selection here should be Marcus Davenport from UTSA. Davenport is an extremely raw talent that has the potential to become a special player and an incredible pass rusher. But the Pace approach to this draft has changed. In the past, Pace has been going for guys with giant ceilings because he was in the midst of a rebuild.

Things have changed this year. With the money spent in free agency, Pace sent a message to the rest of the league that he feels his team is ready to compete, and with that, Pace wants a special talent that he expects to contribute in year one. That man is Derwin James. James is a versatile special player that Vic Fangio will play all over the field.

James will turn a solid secondary into a special unit. He can line up at multiple positions including at the hybrid backer spot. James can make plays as a ballhawk as well as blitz the quarterback, he defends the run and the pass, he’s perfect for what the team needs right now. Pace’s free agent moves helped bolster the offense, and now with the draft, he will help bolster the defense.
