Matt Nagy’s offense needs Trey Burton and Matt Nagy was adamant about that
Matt Nagy has a fever, and the only prescription is more “U” tight end. But seriously, one of the first provisions that Matt Nagy made upon being hired was finding the Chicago Bears a “U” tight end for their new offense.
Ryan Pace told Dan Pompei of the Athletic how important this was to Matt Nagy.
"“Immediately after hiring Matt, he stressed the value of the U tight end for this offense,” Pace said. “There was a clear vision for Trey, how he fits, and how he’ll be utilized. Not a huge factor, but there’s also the extra bonus that he’s familiar with the offense.”"
He immediately stressed the need and has a clear vision for the usage. Matt Nagy wanted Trey Burton. Bad.
This has been something that Matt Nagy himself has also talked about. He understands that Adam Shaheen and Dion Sims are going to have their roles. However, he likely sees Sims as a “Y” tight end, who will spend most of his time in-line. He sees Shaheen as his “F” tight end, who can spread into the slot if needed, but also will play in line.
Still, the Nagy offense needs a third tight end. A different tight end, a mismatch maker. They need a “U”. The “U” can be used in a variety of ways.

They can move in an out of the back field as well as on and off of the line of scrimmage. Burton can be a threat in the running game and in the motion game which helps identify coverages pre-snap. This is something Shaheen and Sims do not bring nearly as much of.
Whether he shows up statistically or not we will see. However, Burton has a clear role in this offense and is going to present clear value, even if it be pre snap.
Nagy got himself his “U”. Now it will be time to see what Nagy can do.
