Many are trying to write off Chicago Bears tight end Dion Sims. However, Matt Nagy still has big plans for him

When the Chicago Bears signed Trey Burton, many speculated that could be the last days of Dion Sims. The team just drafted Adam Shaheen last season. To add Burton is now a third tight end in the past two years. Sims did not have a great year last season and of the three would be the first out of the door.

However, Nagy has stressed that three tight ends matter to his offense. He has stressed that Trey Burton was a need for a seperate role from Shaheen and Sims altogether. Now he is stressing that Sims has true value to the roster.

Nagy said

"“The nice thing with Dion is that he’s a guy that’s proven to be a solid blocker,” Nagy said. “He can be in there and be your ‘Y’ tight end, but yet he still has really good hands. He can make plays on intermediate routes. He’s not going to be anybody that’s a downfield threat — I think he knows that, we all know that — but he’s a valuable piece of this puzzle.”"

He has hit the point home hard that Burton is the “U”, Shaheen is the “F” and Sims is the “Y”. All three have a specific role. All three have value.

In terms of playing time, Burton may get the most. He is the mismatch weapon. In terms of stats, it may be Shaheen. His big play ability and red zone prowess should breakout.

However, the team needs Sims to keep it altogether. Sims has to stay in line so Shaheen and Burton can expose their mismatches. Sims has to demand attention in the short middle game and in the running game. This opens up the outside flats for Burton and the deep middle Shaheen.

People are obsessed with 1,2,3 on the depth chart. With Matt Nagy it is time to learn the roles and understand the value. Nagy knows the value of Dion Sims.
