Roquan Smith rated top defensive rookie in Madden

Roquan Smith was given the ranking as the top defensive rookie in the new edition of Madden. He is also one of the top rookies in Madden rating overall

With the new release of Madden coming we spent a few days projecting what a few of the Chicago Bears stars would be. Now, word is starting to spread about what some of these players are going to be rated.

EA Sports released their list of players who will earn a 99 overall rating earlier in the week. From there, they have started to shell out some rookie player rankings. They unveiled the top five rookies rankings on offense, defense and combined. Roquan Smith made the top five overall, and led the defense with his high rating.

Among defenders, Roquan Smith was rated an 81. Here is what EA had to say about the ranking.

"He’s not the fastest linebacker of the rookie class, but his 89 Speed helps him cover a great portion of the field and an 88 Tackle rating is the best among defensive rookies. With an 80 in Zone Coverage, he’s right at home cutting off the middle of the field."

No surprises that speed and solid tackling lead the way. It is interesting to note that Smith holds down the title for top rookie defender and not Bradley Chubb or Denzel Ward, who were selected ahead of Smith.

Chubb finished in second with a rating of 80. Many would agree that Smith is the better player, and that Chubb was drafted higher due to positional value. Same can be said for Denzel Ward, who finished tied for third with Derwin James, getting a rating of 80. Lastly was Vita Vea, who holds down a 79.

Amongst top rookies, Roquan Smith held things down by being tied for the third overall spot. Chubb sits right behind him at number five. Baker Mayfield has the same rating as Smith at 81. Not bad to come in as respected as the top overall pick. Saquan Barkley is second amongst rookies with a rating of 82, Quenton Nelson is first amongst rookies with a rating of 83.
