It was by the narrowest of margins. However, it can be argued that Harrison Smith is the best safety in the NFL. Even with Adrian Amos coming in at number in the PFF safety grades, who else was number one but Harrison Smith.

Harrison Smith is a game changer. He intercepts passes, pressures the quarterback and makes plays in the running game. Smith can line up in any safety spot on the field and defend wide receivers, tight ends, and running backs. He is a complete overall player and a matchup nightmare.
However, if Andrew Sendejo did not have an excellent 2017 season, it would not be quite the same duo. Sendejo was excellent last season, starting in 13 games and picking off two passes. He rated as the #11 overall safety by PFF standards.
The Bears do pick up some ground on the Vikings when it comes to the depth. Neither depth option in Minnesota inspires much life or passion to argue. If either starter were to go down, the Bears would be in better shape.
However, the starting duo in Minnesota is most likely the best in the NFL now. With that said, it is not an embarrassment for the Chicago Bears to sit in at number two.
