We examine which Chicago Bears will make the 53-man roster at tight end week one against the Green Bay Packers.

As more information comes out in training camp and from the glimpses of the offense that we’ve seen through the first two preseason games for the Chicago Bears, it’s becoming clear that new head coach Matt Nagy plans to utilize the tight end position frequently in his offense.

Most teams carry three tight ends, and if that’s what the Bears do, it might be the most clear-cut position on the team. Trey Burton, Adam Shaheen and Dion Sims will all be making the roster. So if the Bears keep three tight ends, close the book on the position.

However, with the fact that the Bears will be utilizing two tight end sets frequently, the Bears might be planning on carrying four tight ends. If that’s the case, that opens the door for an interesting competition.

The Bears have three other tight ends: Daniel Brown, Ben Braunecker, and Colin Thompson. Thompson didn’t play particularly well against the Baltimore Ravens and wasn’t much better against the Cincinnati Bengals. He seems to be sitting in sixth place among this group and is most likely headed for the waiver wire.

The competition for the fourth tight end spot is between Braunecker and Brown. Braunecker may be a little more versatile in what he can bring to the table in terms of special teams and blocking, but Brown is without question a superior pass catcher.

The Bears have two players that can play the inline or traditional tight end spot well with Sims and Shaheen. Burton is going to play the U position or move tight end where he will be split out regularly and used as more of a pass catcher. Shaheen will also play the U a little bit but a good bet would be to keep Brown on the roster and use him as Burton’s backup at the U.

A group of four tight ends of Shaheen, Burton, Sims and Brown is an outstanding unit and one that should help make Mitch Trubisky comfortable and a unit that Nagy will want to utilize on a regular basis.
