DeAndre Houston-Carson broke his arm against the Denver Broncos. He is going to leave the Chicago Bears with limited safety depth

We had all written off Deiondre’ Hall. Hall was fighting tooth and nail to pick up a 53rd roster spot as the Chicago Bears fifth safety. Deiondre’ Hall was having a good preseason, but in the third game committed an egregious special teams penalty that showed lack of discipline.

Then, it the Bears announced that he was suspended for a game due to violating the leagues banned substance policy. It felt like a player so close to the edge of the roster was going to be pushed off due to these silly errors.

However, it is starting to appear as though the Chicago Bears do have to look at these incidents as two strikes on the season, as a roster spot may have just opened up for Deiondre’ Hall.

The team announced that DeAndre Houston-Carson broke his arm, and is sidelined for a few weeks. The arm injury certainly leaves him out for Week One, but the question remains how long into the season will he miss?

The argument could be made that he would need to be placed on the IR. He likely would not even have his injury healed by Week Four, let along enough to be activated. Putting him on the IR gives him a designation to return in Week 8.

It also gives the Bears a chance to use his roster spot on a fourth safety without keeping a fifth safety. Thus, with the totem pole effect, Hall scoots up into that fourth safety role.

You could argue for Nick Orr to make that leap given the issues with Hall. However, Orr is a prime practice squad candidate. The fact of the matter is that Hall being cut in Week 8 is still pretty likely. He will have that time to prove he is more valuable on special teams than Sherrick McManis. Good Luck. However, for the time being, Hall may be safe.
