Javon Wims sat out for most of the night in the Chicago Bears preseason finale. That does not sound like a player who is on the roster bubble

After a breakout performance against some starters in the Chicago Bears fourth preseason game, Javon Wims arguably locked in a roster spot. He put too much on tape to pass through waivers at that point, and the seventh round rookie ensured that he needed to be kept.

The Chicago Bears appeared to agree with this sentiment considering their treatment of Wims in the last preseason game. Wims was not used on offense. He did see the field, but was getting work on special teams.

The usage of Wims should tell you that the Chicago Bears do not see him as a player on the roster bubble, and instead want to use this snaps for him to grow into a role on special teams.

They have seen enough on offense from Wims. He does not need to get hurt leaping over a four string cornerback who is going to get cut. However, with the idea in mind that he is going to make the team due to his offensive prowess, the Bears do recognize this as an excellent chance to refine his special team’s ability.

Let’s face it, as good as he is; he should not see the field much if everyone stays healthy. The only reason to keep him active is if he is going to give you special teams value. Until then, Josh Bellamy still has value over him on Sundays.

So, while Wims has made the roster, he now has a new challenge to face, earning a helmet on Sundays. He took a step forward in that direction with his special team’s ability on Thursday.
