Hot Take Tuesday: The Incoherent Rantings of a Belligerent Bears fan.

Ohhhh baby! The Chicago Bears are in first place in the NFC North. That’s something we haven’t heard in some time and it’s music to the ears.

Chicago sports fans want to be miserable. It’s not good enough that the team has won two in a row, they aren’t winning 31-6 so it’s not good enough.

Stop complaining, Bears fans! For years, all this team did was find ways to lose games exactly like the last two against the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals. It’s been their MO. Why? Because they were a bad football team.

Bad teams find ways to lose games, good teams find ways to win games. The Bears are a dropped Kyle Fuller interception from being 3-0 so let’s relax. Everyone should be happy with a 2-1 record.

Upcoming Schedule

It’s time the Bears make a jump forward. These games coming up are very winnable. I’m still not buying FitzMagic and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That game is a winnable football game. As is the Miami Dolphins coming up after the bye week. And the schedule keeps lining up winnable games for the first half of the season. Even the New England Patriots game at home doesn’t seem impossible right now.

It’s going to be huge for this team to reel off a few wins in a row and build up some confidence. If they can do that, especially with Green Bay and Minnesota not looking as sharp as they should, the Bears could pad the lead in the division right now.

Keep this in mind, the tie between Minnesota and Green Bay helps the Bears if they are ahead in the standings. That tie might as well be a loss for both of them because neither team tallied a victory. That’s huge. If the Bears can stay in front, that tie will work to their advantage.

The Defense

I want to describe my feelings about the defense, but I can’t keep it PG enough for FanSided’s code of conduct policy. Wow, folks, just wow.

After the Bears got touched up for two quick TDs early against the Cardinals, my Chicago mindset instantly went to, the wheels are falling off, here we go. But what happened? Domination, that’s what happened. The Cardinals went nowhere after those two drives. Literally, nowhere.

After that second score, the Cardinals lost 5 yards the rest of the half and then proceeded to turn the ball over in every second half possession they had. Every single one! That’s not human, that’s total domination.

If you don’t appreciate what’s happening on the defensive side of the ball, then you don’t love football, and we don’t need you as a Bears’ fans.

Mitch Trubisky

Guys, you know I’m a supporter of Mitch and want to see this play out, but the guy struggled again, what can you say? He still showed flashes of big-time ability, but he still looks like he’s struggling to read the defense and know where to put the football.

The fade to Allen Robinson from the 2 when he had 4 receivers and only 3 defenders on the other side of the ball cost the team points, plain and simple. You can’t miss that. Heck, a high school quarterback can’t miss that.

Here’s the issue with Mitch, he’s learning a new offense and because of it, he’s behind in his development. I think we all want to see him further along, but truthfully, this season was supposed to be a learning season for him and a season to grow and we really didn’t think we would see more of what Mitch could be until 2019, but then this defense showed up.

Suddenly, you have a Super Bowl-caliber defense and plenty of weapons on offense and a quarterback who may not be ready this year. It’s not Trubisky’s fault, but the other 21 positions on offense and defense are basically ahead of schedule, but Mitch is a little behind schedule so the two aren’t jiving.

Here’s the key, the Bears are still dominating time of possession and keeping the defense fresh. If they can do that, they’ll get a few points on the board and let the defense win them games and hopefully Mitch can catch up by November and the Bears have a good record thanks to a soft schedule before their schedule gets more difficult and they are going to need Mitch to step up.

But for now, don’t spend every waking moment crushing Trubisky for being what he is- a QB with only 15 starts under his belt, enjoy the fact that the Bears are in first place and they are going to win some football games this season.

Quick Hits

  • Who’s on #TeamBryce with me? Bryce Callahan can play. In fact, Callahan is more important than Adrian Amos to this defense. Yup, I said it. If you only keep one after this year, it should be Callahan.
  • How about Bilal Nichols? Let’s get this kid some more snaps. Enough of Jonathan Bullard.
  • Khalil Mack (Nothing else to say, but that says enough).
  • This defense keeps forcing turnovers, I love it.
  • Roquan Smith has serious closing speed. Much better than Nick Kwiatkoski getting blown by on crossing routes.
  • Khalil Mack (in case you didn’t hear me the first time).
  • How about Chris Conte being destroyed by Vance McDonald on Monday Night Football? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
