The New England Patriots are going to throw looks at Mitch Trubisky that he has never seen before

The New England Patriots are known for taking away what you do best. For the Chicago Bears, asking what they do best is actually a tough answer. They do a lot of different things.

Their most success recently has come in passing to Tarik Cohen down the field. That just so happens to be a Patriots weakness as well.

So, if the Patriots already struggled to take away what the Bears do best, the question then becomes how they can force Mitch Trubisky away from that option? The answer is going to be pressure. Not just your standard pressure, though. The New England Patriots need to confuse Mitch Trubisky.

From doing a weekly report on who should take responsibility for each sack, it came out that Trubisky currently should take most of the blame. Some of that is missing a read, some of that is pocket presence. However, it also had to do with blitz recognition.

When looking at the Bears first five games, they did not face very exotic defenses. The Seattle Seahawks are known for consistently rushing four, and against Mitch Trubisky they barely blitzed. However, one blitz, linked here, got home.

The linebacker shows blitz to the left. The line shifts that way, but the linebacker drops back, and then his teammate to the right blitzes home free. Not great recognition by Trubisky.

The Arizona Cardinals did not even hide a blitz that well and got home.

If there is anyone who is going to take those two clips and make him pay for it, it would be Bill Belichick. The Patriots did a few different things on Sunday Night Football to try to stop Patrick Mahomes. One that worked was throwing exotic blitz looks at him.

Take the play linked here.

There is one player with his hand down, and he is lined out so wide he is almost over Travis Kelce in the slot. Five other players crowd the line, all just standing around. Three of the five drop back, but all three drop back at different times.

They were hoping to show blitz so that if Mahomes looked back their way down the field, he would assume they are much closer to the line of scrimmage. That is also how Dont’a Hightower landed an interception in the game.

Still, Trubisky struggled with one backer showing blitz and the other coming. This will be the first time in a high leverage situation where a team legitimately could send any four of seven players. Trubisky is not going to know, but he is going to have to recognize and decipher quickly.

This will easily be the biggest test of his young career.
