With Matt Nagy known as a coach of the year contender, it is worth seeing where he stacks up to his competition.

Matt Nagy is a coach of the year candidate. There is no doubt about it. However many people have different opinions about who should win the award. It usually comes down to these five nominees.

With that in mind, it is worth looking into who his competition is and seeing if he is worth winning the award. The five nominees listed will have their resumes stacked up against each other.

Before starting, it is worth noting that this award typically does not go to the best head coach. Bill Belichick won the award once since 2003. The award goes to the head coach who exceeded his team’s expectations the most.

Therefore preseason expectations do matter when it comes to the award. With that in mind, who are the top five candidates and where would Matt Nagy rank?

Andy Reid

Andy Reid has done a tremendous job this season, and everyone knows it. He took an offense from Alex Smith that controlled the football and took well-timed shots to the run and gun fun of Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs offense caught everyone by surprise as the Chiefs roared out to an undefeated start while raining points on teams.

A lot of this has to be accredited to Reid. He scouted and drafted Mahomes. They got Sammy Watkins to put the offense together, and from there he called the right plays. However, a lot of this is going to be accredited to Mahomes as well. His ability to improvise and make things happen is rare, no matter who the play caller.

He has the right pieces, but he is going to win MVP. So, with Andy Reid you have an offense loaded with talent and an MVP at quarterback who is excellent at going off of the script. As much credit as Reid deserves he cannot win the award for the success of this offense when so many others are also taking credit.

While they were a record-setting offense to start, they have started to slow down as they have lost pieces, which once again plays against Reid. Reid is an excellent candidate but is not in the running this year.
