Who are five players the Chicago Bears could look to adding to the backfield?

Despite missing out on Kareem Hunt it still appears that Jordan Howard could be a trade candidate for the Chicago Bears this offseason. The obvious assumption is that Matt Nagy is going to get the chance to draft his running back of the future.

It is a good draft for backs, and Nagy has been able to help find some gems at the position in the middle rounds before.

Still, if they are to let go of Jordan Howard, they also have to make a decision on Benny Cunningham in free agency. This could be a position that Nagy does not only hit in the draft but also via free agency. If Nagy does look for a Howard replacement in free agency who are some options to look at?

1. Spencer Ware

Everyone speculated about Matt Nagy being interested in Kareem Hunt after his post season press conference, but he was not asked his thoughts on free agent running back Spencer Ware, who also was coached by Nagy with the Chiefs.

Let’s remember that while Hunt was just a rookie at the time, Spencer Ware was starting ahead of Hunt in the preseason before tearing his ACL in 2017. The rest is obviously history.

The worry with Ware is that he never got back to his old self after the injury, and in fact suffered another injury while trying to step in for Hunt last season.

Spencer Ware is a high-risk player but comes at low cost. He was ahead of Hunt on the depth chart because of pass protection and he can catch as well. At the worst, he can replace Benny Cunningham with more upside to be a part of the offense.
