We all knew it was coming, but the Chicago Bears officially released tight end Dion Sims.
In one of the least surprising news drops of the day, the Chicago Bears officially moved on from Dion Sims yesterday. Sims played for the Chicago Bears in each of the past two seasons but caught just 15 passes for 189 yards.
After a poor start to his Chicago career, it was speculated that the team may move on from him after just one season. However, head coach Matt Nagy was adamant about using three tight ends, and that meant Sims complementing Trey Burton and Adam Shaheen. Sims played most of the first half of the season although he was primarily used as a blocker.
The issue with that is that he was not bringing much to the table as a blocker. When he went down with a season-ending injury the writing was all but on the wall for Sims.
He had played for two different coaches, suffered two different injuries and brought no value to the offense. It was time to move on.
The question now is where do the Chicago Bears go from here? Matt Nagy still wants to play three tight ends, it just never worked out with Dion Sims.
The team is going to have to look to add depth at tight end. They are going to want to add someone who is different stylistically than Burton or Shaheen. A pure blocker is likely what they are going for, although any help in the passing game would obviously not be frowned upon.
