The announcement we had all been expecting was made. The Chicago Bears will move on from Cody Parkey

Nobody is going to be the least bit surprised to hear that Cody Parkey will be released at the start of the year. In fact, the Chicago Bears sped up the process by making the announcement right before the end of the work week.

Unfortunately for the Bears, he was due guaranteed money in 2019 .By releasing him, it actually hurts the team on the salary cap, and they will eat about $5 million in dead space. He will also count for about $1 million in 2020.

However,  it was clear that the team and Parkey needed a clean break. The mss against the Eagles was obviously a breaking point in the relationship, but his misses all season had led to that moment.

There was the Thanksgiving day debacle, and the question about whether he should kick at Soldier Field or not. Nothing worked, and he consistently doinked away points.

While the misses meant he surely would be gone, going on the Today Show to talk about the miss did not sit well for the Chicago Bears either. Matt Nagy mentioned it in his press conference, and if the relationship hadn’t been over, it was then.

Parkey knew when he went on that show that he wouldn’t be back in Chicago next season. He gets his money and will get to sign with a new team next season.

As for the Chicago Bears, they now have to find a kicker. Parkey will not even be brought in as competition so look for two or three names to be added into the mix soon enough.
