The Chicago Bears are not going to be busy buyers this offseason. However, they do need to focus on filling out their roster

The Chicago Bears 2019 offseason may turn into the exact opposite of their 2018 season. In 2018 this team was buying. Heavily. They signed a variety of receivers, and tight ends before drafting Roquan Smith high and trading for Khalil Mack to solidify their defense.

After making the playoffs, this offseason is going to be a bit quieter. All of the names they signed are still signed and draft capital was spent not only Mack but Anthony Miller. A team with so much cap space they do not know what to do with it has turned into the team making cuts to save every last dollar on the cap.

However, while they make their tough decisions, and fill out their starting lineup, they have to remember to maintain strong depth.

The Bears cut Sam Acho but will need to find depth at edge rusher soon. Yes, Khalil Mack can carry the bunch. Still, Leonard Floyd is not signed long term and has injury questions. Even Mack missed two games last year.

What if either went down? The team is turning to Kylie Fitts, who did next to nothing last season. Then, there is Isaiah Irving, who got injured after his only career start as a rookie. The two names are young and promising, but Bears fans would get worried fast if Mack or Floyd went down. Aaron Lynch is a free agent, but after a bounce-back year, it is worth wondering if they can bring back Lynch with the resources they have.

At guard, Kyle Long took a pay cut which helps the team in a huge way. The pay cut was deserved though, Long has not played ten games in a season for over three years. It should be expected that Long could get hurt again this year. Who sits behind Long? You tell me. Eric Kush and Bryan Witzmann are free agents and the Bears are not running to re-sign either.

Behind Trey Burton is the oft-injured Adam Shaheen at tight end with little depth to speak of. At cornerback, the team hopes Bryce Callahan doesn’t turn special teamer and depth corner Sherrick McManis into a starter.

Then there is running back, where Jordan Howard has heard trade rumors, but the team still has not signed Benny Cunningham or Taquan Mizzell, leaving the team with Howard, Tarik Cohen and practice squad member Ryan Nall at the moment.

The Chicago Bears have a young, star-studded roster. However, as they head into the offseason they cannot forget to bring in a complete all-around team. The Bears need to find a way to improve some of the depth they have with the lack of resources they possess.
