After a bad weekend of kicking, the Chicago Bears have hung onto two kickers, and may look for more competition

The Chicago Bears kicking situation has not gone great so far. The team signed a host of kicking options from all over, whether it be the AAF, kicking competitions or UDFAs. Unfortunately, it is tough to say that a single name stood out, and most of the news from the eight man competition was centered around the ineptitude of the kickers.

So with four players signed on for try outs, the Chicago Bears decided that none of them passed the sniff test to move on to another weekend. On top of that, two of the four kickers who were signed were released.

UDFA John Baron, and Redford Jones were let go this weekend.

That leaves the team with 88 roster spots. In a normal situation, that would mean filling those spots with camp bodies and competition at other positions. However, the Chicago Bears are going to want to sign two more kickers and get them in the door to compete.

Considering how quick they were to get rid of the other six, it is tough to say that is a ringing endorsement of the weekend from Blewitt and Fry. Were they the best two, or just not the worst six?

Some Bears fans may think that the tryout players got a raw deal, but the fact is that if they did not standout over their peers as try out players, they do not need another weekend. After this week the 90 roster spots are valuable, the Bears cannot just run back four of the same kickers.

If anything comes from this news, it is that while we are now down to two, we are still far away from finding out who the Chicago Bears future kicker will be.
