The Chicago Bears kicker tryouts over the weekend accomplished little to nothing.

The Chicago Bears hosted a 3-day rookie minicamp over the weekend.

It was the first opportunity to get a look at newly acquired draftees such as David Montgomery and Riley Ridley.

But the focus of the Bears’ media and Bears’ fans everywhere was the kicking competition. The Bears brought in eight kickers for this competition and narrowed it down to two kickers by the end of the weekend.

The entire event was strange. Matt Nagy really pumped this up at the beginning of rookie camp. But by the end of the weekend, the competition finished quietly with very little coming out of it.

The Bears had Redford Jones, John Baron, Chris Blewitt and Elliott Fry on the 90-man roster as well as four additional invitees to rookie camp. At this point, the Bears chose not to sign any of the 4 invitees and released Redford Jones.

Currently (expect that to change) the Bears only have Blewitt and Fry on the roster.

The biggest surprise seems to be that invitee Casey Bednarski seemed to separate himself as the best kicker from the weekend, but yet the Bears chose not to sign him.

The team only has 89 players on the roster right now, so it is possible that they could bump the total number of kickers on the roster back up to 90 prior to OTAs but as of right now, there have been no moves.

The issue that the Bears have right now is that, despite Bednarski’s strong showing, clearly the Bears didn’t think it was strong enough. Based on reports from the weekend, it seems the Bears weren’t pleased with any of the team’s 8 kickers, including Blewitt and Fry, although they were the best with what was left standing.

Next. Bears down to two kickers on 90-man roster. dark

Whatever comes from the Bears and their kicking situation, one thing is certain, they aren’t done looking.
