Is six sacks a fair projection for Chicago Bears edge rusher Leonard Floyd in 2019?

2019 is clearly a significant year when it comes to the potential salary of  Leonard Floyd. When he put up seven sacks as a rookie, expectations to improve from there were set. Instead, Floyd has decreased the past two years from. 4.5 to four sacks. That is not where the Chicago Bears wanted him to be in year four.

Now, in a year that he will likely try to earn a contract moving forward, the question is what can he do in 2019? Mike Clay, who does the projections at ESPN.com has Floyd penciled in between his. past two years and his first year with six sacks in 2019.

Are six sacks fair? Is it good enough? What would a six-sack season mean for his contract possibilities?

When looking at Floyd, this should be a career year. That means getting back to seven sacks, if not higher.

When looking at his rookie season, Floyd had the best year of his career but finished with a neck injury that lingered into the offseason. Your first offseason is always a whirlwind, and now his second offseason had him behind schedule.

In year three Floyd started to come along, but a PCL and MCL injury ended year two in 10 games. It once again had Floyd rehabbing in the offseason and not advancing on his game. Year three saw Floyd start his season with a cast on his hand.

However, he ended year three healthy. This is the first season where he did not rehab an injury since he was drafted. It also happens to be the first season he gets to work with Khalil Mack all offseason.

Remember, Mack did not play in the preseason, and Floyd was playing injured as the two worked on the fly. Mack and Floyd can work off of each other with the timing element down this offseason, and the attention of Mack will open up more for Floyd.

The Bears picked up the fifth-year tender for Floyd, but Floyd will enter next offseason looking for an extension. He could also do it coming off of his best statistical season. While it would be a reach considering his career arch, the context presented gives a chance to lean over six sacks next year.
