Ranking Chicago Bears 2019 roster: 60-56
59. Dax Raymond, TE
With the Chicago Bears depth at tight end, Dax Raymond automatically becomes an interesting prospect. Raymond is a 2019 UDFA from Utah State, who excelled in the passing game.
Raymond was used as a chess piece in the passing game, but his biggest issue ascending to the NFL will be putting on muscle and learning the nuances of blocking.
This is what takes Raymond from a potential number three tight end behind Trey Burton and Adam Shaheen to a player who resembles a Burton backup.
Matt Nagy wants a blocker, a splitter, and a move player in his group, and Raymond and Burton have the most similar traits as move players. This idea was essentially finalized when Bradley Sowell moved from lineman to tight end to become the blocking tight end. With Shaheen as a seam splitter, it is clear that Raymond has a role carved out.
Burton is recovering from offseason surgery, so the role should not be taken lightly by Raymond, and it makes him a top 60 player. Still, Burton is expected to be healthy, and that would leave Raymond subjected to the practice squad for the time being.
