How has the 2019 offseason affected Chicago Bears linebacker, Danny Trevathan?

Danny Trevathan is a staple of this defense. However, entering training camp, Trevathan is in an interesting spot as he enters camp entering free agency in 2020. The question with Trevathan entering 2019 come in two regards.

First, will he get an extension? Second, when will Roquan Smith take over as the play caller at linebacker.

Smith is the future and blossomed as a rookie despite a limited training camp with almost no preseason. Now, Smith has a full offseason and will work through the preseason as well. He is going to take over the playcalling duties sooner rather than later.

The bigger question comes with his contract. His play calling duties also will be included in those negotiations. As a play-calling top dog at linebacker, Trevathan could still see money on the market.

However, the Bears will see Trevathan as a 30-year old Robin to the Batman that is Roquan Smith. The two are going to view themselves a lot differently this offseason, and that may lead to a struggle to come to terms before the season.

Without reaching a deal before the season. Trevathan may get to an offseason as a free agent. This is where he may hear the offers that teams will give a number one play-calling linebacker.

The Bears have to factor in that they do not have the firmest depth behind Trevathan. They would not like to lose him, and as the number two he will be the best in the league at that role.

However, entering a contract year it is hard to envision a deal getting done. On top of that, he should lose play-calling duties to Roquan Smith. Trevathan is going to be just fine in 2019, but for that, his stock takes a hit.
