Once all 90 players on the Chicago Bears’ roster arrive at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, IL for training camp on Thursday, obviously, the top story will be the battle between kickers Elliot Fry and Eddy Pineiro. The Bears’ kicking situation has been a topic of interest ever since the infamous double-doink by former Bears kicker Cody Parkey, which abruptly ended Chicago’s season in the wild card round of the playoffs.

In a press conference from this past Sunday, head coach Matt Nagy fielded several questions regarding the kicking battle that will take place during training camp, and said that both Fry and Pineiro will have numerous chances to win a spot on the 53-man roster for the 2019 regular season.

Here’s what Nagy said, according to JJ Stankevitz of nbcsports.com:

“We need to figure out this position, right? We need to understand it’s a crucial spot first we’ve got to get right,” Nagy said. “I think the more opportunities that you have for these guys to prove who they are and what they could do, we’ll take ‘em.

“So there may be some questionable play calls in the preseason. I’ll just leave it at that and we’ll go from there.”

With that being said, it appears that we may be seeing Nagy and the offense intentionally setting up both kickers for field goals more than we may like. It remains to be seen just how Nagy will divvy up the playing time between Fry and Pineiro, but we’ll definitely get a chance to see if either one is worthy of making this team once Chicago’s preseason starts on August 8 against the Carolina Panthers.

In addition to this news, the Bears have also made it known that they will continue to keep an eye on all of the other kicking situations with other teams across the NFL.
