Where does the stock stand on the second-year inside linebacker?

If you have been reading the site for a while, you know the general perception around Roquan Smith. The pick was appreciated at the time, and we recommended starting him sooner rather than later.

We have written pieces comparing him to other former top ten picks after his rookie season and speculated on his role in 2019. All of the research, statistics, and vibe around the team show that Roquan Smith is in for a step forward next season.

He is no longer with Vic Fangio, but Smith held out last season and missed most of camp and all of the preseason. Despite that, he still put up impressive numbers and jumped right into the defense as if he was the day one starter.

So, in year two he gets a new playbook, but that should be no big deal. In fact, that should mean the team transitions to Smith calling plays next year.

Danny Trevathan has held down the role. However, he is a free agent next year and is on the back end of his career. The switch is coming sooner than later. While the entire defense is adjusting to a new playbook, they might as well have Smith be the one setting everything in motion.

This should mean another big year for Smith. He will slowly emerge as one of the leaders on one of the better defenses in the NFL. This should lead to the recognition that is expected from a top ten pick. After a rocky start to his career, and a seamless transition, expect smooth sailing moving forward.
