Where does the stock on the Chicago Bears offensive lineman stand heading into the start of training camp?
Cody Whitehair is moving from center to guard. This could be the first statement in a case for Whitehair being a player whose stock is on the way down.
However, that would be taking out of context what exactly Whitehair is. He is quite possibly the best offensive lineman on the roster. His combination of physicality, athleticism, and understanding have made him an elite run blocker who goes untested against the pass.
His biggest issue by far has been snapping the football. What sounds easy for some has plagued a player who arguably is a more natural guard than the center. In James Daniels, they have a more natural center than guard. The transition should be seamless for both.
So, Whitehair moving to guard should only make him a better overall option on the line. However, guards are not as valuable as centers. This could affect him in an open market.
The Chicago Bears should be looking to lock in Whitehair immediately. If they have to pay an upcharge price because he put in a few snaps at center so be it. They may be paying for what turns into an elite guard nonetheless.
It would not be shocking to see the team extend him this offseason in camp before he displays that he must be paid elite money.
Whitehair is moving positions due to a skillset issue on his end. While that sounds bad on the surface, the change is going to bring out the best of Whitehair, and should not affect his longterm standing or financial place on the team. He is still on the rise.
