David Montgomery was the star of the Chicago Bears first preseason game. Is it just the preseason, or was there a big takeaway for the team?

We have been told countless times not to overreact. We have seen it play out first hand. The preseason does not mean much. We do not know what the Chicago Bears are looking for out of their players, let alone what the opposition has in their plans.

However, it was tough to walk away from the first start of David Montgomery’s career and not be impressed. Montgomery only saw three rushes. However, he churned out 16 yards and a touchdown.

More important? Three receptions for 30 yards. Matt Nagy talked about his passing game value. The team moved on from Jordan Howard for this, and finally, we saw it in live-action. Montgomery even worked pass protection, a huge key for getting on the field as a rookie.

So, was this just a player having a nice night in a meaningless game or a sign of things to come?

What is worth noticing with Montgomery is how natural everything came to him. The toughest thing for NFL players to pick up on is the speed of the game. Usually, things move fast.

Still, he showed natural hands and an ability to turn upfield, even if he only caught dump-offs. He also showed patience behind the line of scrimmage. The ability to slow things down, and let the play develop in front of him is impressive, no matter what the defense was doing. It shows a natural ability to process the game.

This start should make Bears fans excited about what is to come. He will surely have his issues, but the start and natural ability to jump in is worth mentioning in a game that does not have many takeaways.
