Can Offensive Line Protect the QB from Miller and Chubb?

CHICAGO, IL – AUGUST 11: Bobby Massie

Since we just touched on the subject of pass protection, let’s dig a little deeper on the issue. As mentioned earlier, the Bears’ offensive line allowed their quarterback to get sacked five times in the season opener. This week’s task of keeping the pass rush a bay won’t be any easier. Miller and Chubb are liable to wreak havoc at any given time, and most of that responsibility will fall on the shoulders of tackles Charles Leno Jr. and Bobby Massie.

Of course, one thing the Bears may use are multiple tight end sets to help with protection—especially with former offensive lineman Bradley Sowell. Now, another way to protect the quarterback is to actually run the ball and use screens in the passing game. In 2018, the Broncos ranked 22nd in run defense. If any of that has carried over into 2019, toting the rock a lot more may be something Chicago should consider if they want to keep their quarterback upright for most of the game.
