5 signs of growth in Chicago Bears offense
2. David Montgomery leads the way
The Chicago Bears took a bunch of heat for not including Montgomery as a key piece of their offense in Week 1. He was behind Mike Davis and barley played. However, when he did see the field, he performed. He caught his only target and raced upfield. He converted the first down on the ground but had just five attempts.
The Bears may have thought the lights and the defense of Green Bay was a lot to throw someone into. However, they saw enough in his limited time to put him out there for a decent workload in a huge game.
Montgomery was not just the lead back, he was essentially the only back. The Bears had six players record a rushing attempt, but that includes two from Patterson, four from Cohen, one from Gabriel, one from Trubisky, and just three for Davis.
From 6 to 5 in favor of Davis to 18 to 3 in favor of Montgomery is a fast change. Will Davis see more work in differently paced games? Maybe. Is Montgomery the lead back now? Yes.
We will see how Montgomery progresses in the offense, but for a rookie, he has not looked overwhelmed. Considering the progression of Montgomery, Miller, Burton, and even Cohen and Patterson into new roles, this offense still can reach serious heights.
