The Chicago Bears may have ended the tight end experiment for Bradley Sowell

One of the more interesting notes from the gamely seen of the Chicago Bears was the release of Bradley Sowell. The team added Abdullah Anderson from the practice squad before the game to make the corresponding move.

This is interesting for Sowell, who changed positions to ensure he would not get cut from the Bears. Sowell was competing for a swing tackle job and was on the outside looking in.

To keep his roster status open, he decided to lose weight and transition to a position that the team was weaker at in tight end. Sowell could get on the field at tight end with the lack of depth.

On top of that, his role as a “Y” tight end is completely different than the “F” of Adam Shaheen or the “U” of Trey Burton.

The team signed J.P. Holtz just lack week. With the injury to Trey Burton, the first thought was that the team is weak at tight end and needed a body. However, looking into the profile of Holtz and it may have been telling that he was stepping in for Sowell.

Holtz is a pro blocker who does not offer anything as a pass catcher. However, where Sowell is a lineman transitioning to tight end. At least Holtz is an actual tight end. Anderson has been a stud in the middle as a nose tackle in the preseason. He is great depth piece behind Goldman.

With the addition of Holtz, and with him getting a week to learn the play book, there is no usage for Sowell. It was an experiment, it failed and team moved on swiftly.

Look for Holtz to take over the blocking tight end role moving forward.
