Who have been the five biggest pleasant surprises through the first four games of the Chicago Bears 2019 season?

The Chicago Bears are sitting at 3-1 which may not be a surprise to many Chicago Bears. However, how they got there has to be a surprise to most Bears fans. The team took a road less traveled and the stories, plays and everything behind the scenes will change our perception, even if the team is right where we expected them to be.

Like every season there are surprises and disappointments. Some players exceed expectations, some fail to live up. Who are five players who have over shot what was expected of them to date?

5. Javon Wims

When the Chicago Bears drafted Riley Ridley, this looked like bad news for Javon Wims. Wims was a 7th round pick who was hardly on the active roster, and a higher draft pick may have been the move to push him off the roster. However, Wims knew Ridley well, and had outperformed Ridley while sharing the same college field.

Wims beating out a raw Ridley was a surprise to some, but something we expected. Still. what was not expected was how much Wims would see the field so far this year. Against the Packers, he was essentially the number three wide receiver in terms of routes and targets.

After slowing down the next two weeks, a Taylor Gabriel injury once again pushed him into the mix. Many saw Anthony Miller stepping up as the number two, but we liked the chances of Wims, considering his play style. He is a down field target, where Miller is a yards after the catch target.

Both are needed, but Wims fills a downfield role that Gabriel is excellent at. The biggest surprise is that Wims is out pacing Miller so far as a receiver. Sure, he would step in over Miller with Gabriel out. However, through four games, Wims has one more reception, a better catch rate, and more yards per reception. Wims has been the better receiver. This can say something about Miller, but it says a ton about a receiver who went from 7th round, to roster bubble, to member of a 3-1 offensive attack.
