Da Bears

Have you ever told someone who does not reside in the state of Illinois where you are from? If you mention Chicago, or even just Illinois at times, many people will say something about “Da Bears”. They try to impersonate the Chicagoan accent and well, the outcome is usually rather entertaining.

Not everyone knows where this saying truly came from though. Shocking, I know. Apparently, some people have lived under a rock most of their lives. The phrase “Da Bears” was coined by a Saturday Night Live skit done back in the early 1990s. The focus was on the 1985 Super Bowl champion Chicago Bears and the fans who fell in love with that team.

The skit centered around Bill Swerski and the Superfans. The funny part about this is how Chicago Bear fans actually owned these personas. Personas portrayed by comedians Joe Montegna, Chris Farley, Mike Meyers and Robert Smigel. Personas made to actually make fun of Chicago Bears fandom and how many sounded in the 1990s, despite the team being fairly awful.

The Bears organization has not had much success since the 1985 Super Bowl run, and many fans still like to live in the glory days. Even today you hear things like, Coach Ditka (said in my Chicago accent by the way) would never let these china dolls play the game this way. Trey Burton has anxiety? Well, Da Coach (another term coined by SNL) would scare that right out of his system.

If you have not seen these skits or it has been a while, I suggest searching the internet and reliving some of that comedic gold. Make sure to check out Coach Ditka versus Hurricane Ditka. That is a Superfan conundrum right there.
