They are who we thought they were

If you follow sports, and why would you be reading this if you did not, then most of you may recall the iconic phrase “they are who we thought they were”. This phrase made sports and social media history. To this day, my buddies and I use this phrase, even if to describe just how bad the Chicago Bears are in a season. Heck, we use it for things beyond sports sometimes too.

Whenever this phrase is said, it brings us back to a game full of emotion. A game that looked to be a disaster. In fact, remember how I said Bears fans love to relive the glory days? Well, this quote by Dennis Green in his press conference was during the Chicago Bears 2006 Super Bowl run. This makes this quote all that more special.

By the way, this is another one that if you have not heard, you must search the internet. Sports press conferences can sometimes give us great entertainment. Most seem to come from the losing team after a loss. Others include, “I am a man”, “Playoffs, Playoffs” or “We’re talking about practice, not a game, practice”.

Throwing a person in front of the media after a loss is a recipe for outbursts and likely why they still take place so quickly after games. We want to see the raw emotions felt. We want to feel like we are a part of the team or something. This focus is not just on the losing side either. We are entertained by the emotions of winning and losing teams.

In this case, the Arizona Cardinals took a big 20-0 lead over the Chicago Bears in the first half. At that time, the Bears were 5-0 and the Cardinals were 1-4. Was this the implosion most fans expected from the Bears? Was this the start of an early exit from playoff contention? I know that sounds extreme, but this is how we seem to react as Bears fans. Negative, negative and negative.

After halftime though, the Chicago Bears defense put this game on their shoulders (like usual here in the Windy City) and started to turn things around. The teams exchanged field goals in the third quarter until Mike Brown returns a fumble recovery for a touchdown. This made the score 10-23 going into the fourth quarter.

A Charles Tillman fumble recovery for a touchdown and a Devin Hester 83-yard punt return for a touchdown later put the Bears on top 24-23. The team remained undefeated going into the bye week. More importantly, Dennis Green’s press conference goes in the history books and the hearts of Bears fans forever.
