The NFL trade deadline will be here before we know it. The Chicago Bears should go trick-or-treating in Washington’s neighborhood and trade for Brandon Scherff.
The Chicago Bears offense is struggling this season. Actually no, that is an understatement. The offense has been nothing less but garbage. The biggest issue that I see with this team is their ability, or lack thereof, to block. Both pass blocking and run blocking has been bad, but the run blocking has been downright awful.
With the Chicago Bears on their bye week, I made it clear that I believe Matt Nagy needs to flip Cody Whitehair and James Daniels back despite this not being their natural positions. Daniels and Whitehair looked downright dominant at times in 2018. This year they are the ones being dominated. I fear Daniels does not have what it takes to command an offensive line.
The other problem the Chicago Bears have had comes from honestly one of my favorite players. Kyle Long does not look like himself at all. I am not sure if the injuries have ruined his career or what the problem is, but he is a liability out there. Many fans are saying to pull him this week and replace him with Rashaad Coward.
Coward did a solid job when he filled in for Kyle Long against the Minnesota Vikings, but that still is not good enough. I want this team to make a splash and turn their offensive line back into a run-blocking juggernaut. Without space or holes, neither David Montgomery or Tarik Cohen can run consistently for positive gains.
This is where Brandon Scherff comes into play. Scherff is on the last year of his contract. Kyle Long is set to make $9.6 million in 2020. If I am Ryan Pace, I am finding a way to trade for Scherff this week before the New Orleans Saints game and benching Kyle Long.
Yes, this pains me to write as I have only ever owned one offensive lineman’s jersey and it is a Kyle Long jersey. However, the front office and coaching staff have to do what is best for the team. Long looks like a shell of himself and it has to be the years of constant injuries.
Scherff is one of the best run-blocking guards in the NFL. He is projected to make between $12-$13 million dollars a year. With only a $1.5 million dollar dead cap hit on Long next year, they can use the savings towards Scherff’s deal.
Scherff will likely cost the Bears one of their second-round picks, but I honestly think he is worth it. They are likely going to have to draft a lineman with one of those two second-rounders anyway, why not go grab one now who can help with this season and beyond?
