Being around for 100 years means that the Chicago Bears have had a lot of great moments in their history. Perhaps the greatest moment came when the Bears ran roughshod over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XX.

Just listening to the Super Bowl Shuffle brings back memories of great days gone by. If you were lucky enough to have witnessed the Bears’ greatest game to date, you will remember just how special it was. William Perry’s touchdown, the stifling defense and all of the side stories up to and through the game.

It was truly the greatest moment in Bears’ history.

The Bears had stormed their way through the NFL that season only stumbling once on their way to a 15-1 record. They went through the playoffs (not including the Super Bowl) giving up zero points to the Giants and Rams.

They were destined to win the Super Bowl.

Things didn’t start out the way that anyone thought they would. The Patriots scored a quick field goal to put Chicago behind by three, but it would be the last time the Bears would be behind. Chicago exploded for 46 total points while only allowing ten to the opposition.

The game was a blowout.

We all remember that team having some of the most interesting characters in football, at the time. The punky quarterback, Jim McMahon, had quite the week leading up to the game. Walter Payton was the quiet star who did his job and gained a lot of notoriety. Willie Gault was fast and played that way.

Then you had the defense. The Bears had the most stars in the league on this side of the ball. There were characters such as Dan “Danimal” Hampton and Steve “Mongo” McMichael. You cannot forget Samurai Mike Singletary, the MVP of the Super Bowl Richard Dent and Wilber Marshall.

The defense was made up of some of the greatest talent to ever play football.

When we think of the Chicago Bears, we think of two things. A strong rushing attack and a suffocating defense. The 1985 team had it all. There is no question that the defense was suffocating. It’s easily one of the best, if not the best, defenses in NFL history.

The rushing attack was led by Payton and the passing attack, which was actually decent kept the ball moving and the Bears winning.

This team was the perfect combination of everything you would want in a football team. And they were good.

The best representation of this team is found in their Super Bowl victory which was really the highlight of their one year of dominance over the NFL. Granted, you had the 73-0 game years before but in this, the modern era and the era that most people pay attention to (although I think that it’s important to look back on the Bears’ great history as a whole).

The Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots was the moment that helped define the modern era Chicago Bears. There is no doubt about it when people think of the Bears they think of the 1985 team.

Perhaps that’s because the Bears haven’t put anything up that’s going to replace that memory just yet.

But hopefully, in time, they will.
