Chicago Bears add depth defender Brent Urban
The Chicago Bears made a move on Monday to sign defensive end Brent Urban
The Chicago Bears run defense has struggled in each of the past two weeks. After Josh Jacobs lit them up in London, a tough outing against Latavius Murray has brought attention to a unit that shut down Dalvin Cook not long ago.
Of course, the team losing Akiem Hicks and dealing with the impact of his loss likely has to do with it. Nick Williams stepped up in moments but is a depth player who can help in spurts but cannot hold down the fort with Hicks out long term.
Aside from that, Abdullah Anderson is more of a project than a player that can be relied on. Without longterm options who can help the defense, the team is looking to Urban.
Urban was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens, to help their multiple front defenses. He played all over the line as the Ravens showed different looks.
However, Urban was never more than a depth player and only recorded two sacks as a career-high. In 2018, he only had 0.5 sacks but did have a career year with 27 tackles and two going for loss.
Still, in a contract year that was not enough and Urban followed former Ravens defensive coordinator Dean Pees to Tennessee.
However, after struggling early into 2019, the Titans let Urban go.
Urban is a run-first defender, which will help for a team that is struggling in that area. However, he is limited in his pass rush and has not established himself as a consistent player. This is a small band-aid for what is looking like a bigger wound than expected.
