If the issues continue with Mitch Trubisky, when will the Chicago Bears put him on the bench?
Mitch Trubisky stuggled yet again and the Chicago Bears lost yet again. This is becoming the theme of the 2019 season. Still, for all of the issues that have come with Trubisky, the Bears have shown faith in him.
Head coach Matt Nagy has been critical, but also has had the back of his quarterback. He has mentioned the offensive line, the timing with receivers, and even his own play calls as issues that have contributed to the slow development of Trubisky.
Still, even Nagy knows that while he can have patience, and while his playbook may take time, the Bears need to produce with Trubisky at quarterback.
When asked about how much more time Nagy needs to know what he has in his quarterback, he did mention that the time to make a decision is coming soon.
"“I think we’re getting close to that, and he knows that. When I say that, meaning, when there’s opportunities to be made. We want to make those and he wants to make them. But we’ve just gotta do it. But, it’s the world we live in right now. People want it now.”"
Of course, he did not put an actual timetable on things. The fact of the matter is that as poor as Trubisky has played, the team is going to have to go down with his ship.
Chase Daniel is a career backup, and is not even a great one. He is 2-2 as a Bears starter, and the Bears offense hs been much worse in the four games with him at the helm. That says a lot considering the issues with Trubisky.
The fact is that there is no upside with Daniel and the same downside. The Bears could make a trade, but are limited in draft capital.
This offseason, the team could maneuver cap, trade for assets and find a quarterback. That is too many moving pieces to get done by this afternoon.
If Trubisky gets worse could he get benched? Yes, but he would likely wind up back on the field for a game or two considering the Bears other options.
Trubisky does not have a long leash, and is not a long term option. However, he is going to start the rest of the way this season.
