This season has been nothing short of a disappointment. At 3-4 in the NFC, the Chicago Bears cannot fold up shop just yet. With Mitchell Trubisky struggling offensively, Matt Nagy has three options on how to handle the situation.
The Chicago Bears have a big game against the Philadelphia Eagles today. This is nothing short of a must-win game or the Bears season is on the brink of being over. The team is not out of the playoff hunt as of yet. There is a group of teams bunched up in the middle of the NFC that are vying for a Wild Card spot. The Bears are one of those teams.
The Bears defense has been decent all year, but even they have not played as well lately. The team was in the top five for Defensive DVOA until the Oakland game. Now they are still in the top 10, but the team finds themselves currently sixth. The team played better versus the Chargers and moved back up from seventh to sixth as we head into Week 9.
The offense has been anything but decent this season. The team finds themselves currently ranked 28th in offensive DVOA. The Bears have had many issues with their offense. Matt Nagy’s play-calling, offensive line issues, and most notably Mitchell Trubisky‘s regression.
Matt Nagy is not willing to hand over play-calling duties right now. He has made that very clear despite it possibly being a good idea. The game against the Chargers the team moved the ball well and established a power running game with the I formation. However, once inside the red zone, the play-calling went back to being too cute and the team settled for field goals.
One of those field goals was a miss off the upright from 33-yards out. Eddy Pineiro seemed to be the fix this team needed at the kicker position, but now even his ability to make kicks consistently is in question. With Matt Nagy’s track record on decision-making, I have a funny feeling last week’s kicking performance is going to affect his play-calling within the 35 yard-line.
The offensive line struggles have been mostly in the running game, but they have not been the best pass blockers either. Blocking assignments seem to be the biggest issue for this offensive line. Maybe the schemes are too complicated. Maybe the lineman are not as good as we thought. One thing is for sure, they looked much better last week. Hopefully, that’s the start of better things to come.
Now, these issues are occurring every week, but the Mitchell Trubisky problem might be the biggest problem of the three. Here are three ways the Chicago Bears can handle the Mitchell Trubisky situation.
