Chicago Bears need to release this player

The Chicago Bears would be best off releasing Mike Davis this week to save a compensatory pick

The compensatory pick process is a confusing one. Essentially if you lose more players to free agency than you sign, you are rewarded with a future draft pick, somewhere after round 3. The Chicago Bears saw Bryce Callahan and Adrian Amos walk this offseason for big deals elsewhere.

They let them go knowing that their salaries elsewhere could get them a future pick. However, the team signed Cordarrelle Patterson, Buster Skrine and Mike Davis. While they did not add more money via free agency, they added three players.

While the compensatory pick calculations are confusing, right now, the Bears addition essentially cancel out their losses.

However, if the team is to release Mike Davis, it may be enough to get them a fourth round compensatory pick. This is not an exact science, but the fact of the matter is that if this is possible, it needs to be done. Now.

Mike Davis has fallen out of favor and has two carries in the past month. He has two games with zero snaps in the past three weeks.

Whatever plans they had for him have not worked out. When looking at a 3-5 team, even if they need Davis due to an injury or emergency situation, does adding him into the mix spark a playoff run? Absolutely not.

This team needs to get a future pick. They are up against the cap next year and still don’t have their first round pick due to the Khalil Mack trade. Any pick is a good pick for Chicago because of their lack of resources.

Davis is providing nothing, and even his strongest impact would not change the season. Cut him today and give yourself a better chance in the future.
