It is one thing for General Manager Ryan Pace to make mistakes, the way he goes about them is a scarier thought

With DeShaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes ascending into top tier quarterbacks while Mitch Trubisky struggles to run an offense, questions have risen over how Ryan Pace decided to pass on the two stars for Trubisky.

A fascinating article was written that detailed the entire process. It is well worth a read.

The fact of the matter is that everyone makes mistakes. The New England Patriots passed on Tom Brady five times, the Ravens drafted a tight end ahead of Lamar Jackson. Still, the process in which Pace went through to find Trubisky is stunning.

In reading the article, it came out that Pace never had an interest in Watson. He never worked him out or interviewed him privately. Even more damning is that head coach John Fox and quarterbacks coach Dave Ragone had Watson as their top quarterback.

Pace not only did not do his due diligence. The least he could do is acknowledge that he may draft Watson. Instead, he went into the draft without a thought of the National Champion quarterback.

Even worse than that is that he went behind everyone in the organizations back to make the move. He did not consult or even listen to the opinion of Fox or Ragone.

We all laugh at Fox, but he was right in this situation. Ragone is still on the coaching staff. How did Pace not even care about his opinion?

Pace is a great talent evaluator. However, he may think too highly of himself. Getting opinions from coaches and front office members you respect can open blind spots that any human being will have. No one can cover every snap from every player before a draft.

The fact that Pace thought he was so smart that he did not need to listen to anyone’s advice, and that he did not even care to spend time looking into Watson is so much worse than the actual selection of Trubisky. And the pick was terrible.

Ryan Pace was once the executive of the year. Now, he looks like a guy who swings a big bat and will strike out three times for every home run. This is not a good look.
