Trey Burton will miss Sunday’s game against the LA rams. He has hardly contributed for the Chicago Bears this season

In 2018, when the offense was at least on stable ground, Trey Burton was a key member of the offense. His versatility and reliability came in for big plays, short yardage, blocking and catching. He was a key piece of the offense, and one Matt Nagy stressed to have.

Then came the playoff game that Burton missed with a groin injury. The sudden injury brought up sepculation, but Nagy said Burton had been playing through it.

In the offseason, Burton had surgery on what many assumed was the same issue that held him out of the playoff game. That recovery went from missing camp to missing the start of the season.

Burton came back, but nothing was right. Four catches for 20 yards was his best mark of the season and he had one target in each of the past two games.

Now, Burton is out with a new injury, one to his calf. Nagy talked about the issues that not having Burton provide. He mentioned how his offense relies on the presence of a move tight end.

The downfall of Adam Shaheen has not helped.

This is essentially a washed year for Burton. The Bears could save a small amount of cap, but he will still be on their books for an amount where you would assume he will be back next season.

The Bears have to hope that all of the time off can get his body back to normal. They also have to understand that they can only use him in short spurts. Beyond that, 2020 will be the last year Burton is with the Bears.

All of the sudden tight end shoots to the list of biggest needs with this roster.
