Bears: Adding this quarterback makes the most sense for 2020

Ryan Pace and the Chicago Bears have some work to do this offseason. At 4-6 the team is essentially out of the playoff hunt. Pace needs to revamp his quarterback room and Andy Dalton could be the missing piece.

This might be the most disappointing Chicago Bears season I have experienced. The team came out with high hopes of dominating the NFC North again. At the very least, they thought they’d be playoff contenders. Turns out, the team is a pretender.

The NFC has been too top-heavy and dominant this season for the Bears to have a chance now. They had to win last Sunday against the Rams. Newsflash though, the Rams are not making the playoffs either. Both teams seem to be struggling in similar ways this season.

Whether you are a Ryan Pace believer or not, he has done some great things. I love his aggressiveness even if it is to a fault at times. He revamped the wide receiver corps in 2018 and this year he will need to revamp a few other areas. Most notably, offensive line, tight end and unfortunately the quarterback position.

I am still a fan and supporter of Mitchell Trubisky. Personally, I think he is better than people give him credit. He has been bad tough this season and at the very least the Bears need to bring in some serious competition. Many Bears fans are screaming for Cam Newton. I would not be opposed to that idea if he was healthy, but the cost is going to be too high.

When I say cost, I do not just mean dollars and cents. The Bears would likely have to trade for Newton using draft capital they do not have. This means the team needs to look elsewhere. Not to mention, I honestly do not believe Newton improves this team that drastically.

Other names who have been mentioned are Marcus Mariota, Nick Foles and Teddy Bridgewater. Mariota is probably my second choice. I have never been a Mariota guy and I am not sure he’d improve this offense at all. I am on record pointing out how bad Nick Foles is at quarterback so no thank you. I’d be okay with Teddy-B, but he too will likely require a draft pick as I think the Saints will re-sign him.

This leaves me with Andy “the Red Rifle” Dalton. He has the hair to fit in with the color scheme of this team. Not quite the match he has had with the Bengals, but maybe the blue with orange would do Dalton some good. Dalton should not cost the Bears any draft capital as I project the Bengals to release him. He has no guaranteed money but will cost them $17.7 million dollars in 2020. Once released, I think the Bears could sign him to around $42 million over three years.

Dalton is still young enough to set himself up with another franchise for a few years. He is only 32 years old. If he plays well wherever he goes next, he could play another five to 10 years. Dalton has had some strong seasons too. In 2015, Dalton finished the year with a 106.2 quarterback rating. He through 25 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. He only played 13 games that year too.

Dalton has 20 comeback wins and 24 game-winning drives. He is a career 62.2 percent passer and has proven to be able to sling the rock. Dalton was not the reason the Bengals have yet to win a game this year. In fact, that team could possibly go without a win all season.

If I am Ryan Pace, Andy Dalton is the first guy I am going to call. Bringing him in and pairing him with Mitchell Trubisky would be a fantastic upgrade at the quarterback position. Who knows, maybe Pace can then sign Trubisky to a cheaper second deal and keep him around in hopes he becomes more consistent in the near future. I am also drafting a quarterback this year.

dark. Next. Cam Newton not enough to fix Bears

With Dalton, Trubisky and whichever quarterback I can draft in the 2020 NFL Draft, I will have them compete and the best player becomes the starter. Competition usually brings better play out in others. I know Ryan Pace reads BearGogglesOn and I am sure he will enjoy my insight. Jokes aside, I do have faith that Pace will attack this head-on and changes will occur this offseason.

Unfortunately, this team has shown to have some other glaring holes that will also need to be addressed or a new quarterback will not make a difference.
