Trubisky played well despite his QB rating

Numbers do not always mean everything. Mitchell Trubisky finished the game with a 69.0 quarterback rating. Yuck, I know. I already laid out the mistakes that Trubisky made in this game. However, he played better than his final numbers showed.

Trubisky gained a total of 296 yards versus the Giants on Sunday. He threw for 278 and he ran for another 18 yards. Whenever Trubisky is running out of the backfield and making smart decisions with his legs, you can just tell the difference in his confidence. Today, he had that swagger. You especially saw it on his touchdown run in the third quarter. He was full of passion and energy.

Trubisky had solid footwork today. He was driving with his lower body on most throws and these led to successful plays. Had the 60-plus yard pass to Allen Robinson in the second quarter held up, Trubisky’s numbers would have looked even better. Who knows if he would have been able to score another touchdown for his team or not, but he would have thrown for over 300 yards for the first time all season.

What I liked the most about Trubisky today was that he was putting the ball in front of his receivers. This allowed them to catch and run for extra yards often. As I keep saying, he looked better than his stats imply. I look forward to seeing what he does to keep building off his last few games. The Lions should be another positive defensive backfield he can manipulate.

The playcalling was better suited for Trubisky today too. Matt Nagy had Trubisky doing more rollouts and moving pockets. This helped the offensive line who did a better job today holding blocks and giving Trubisky more time to throw the ball. There were times when the tempo was faster too. I tend to think Trubisky is better with that because he does not have to think and just plays using his athleticism. Who knows, but he did look better.

Will Bears move on from Trubisky in 2020?. dark. Next

This is the problem with Trubisky though. He finds ways to look good and show us flashes of his great potential. Unfortunately, those flashes do not seem to be enough. The young quarterback has really struggled this season and it will be interesting to see what the team decides to do with the quarterback position in 2020.
