The Chicago Bears have simply not lived up to lofty expectations this season. After winning the NFC North a season ago, the team has regressed due to major issues with the offense with much of that falling on failing starting quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. Could he, and possibly head coach Matt Nagy, be on the way out?

On this week’s episode of Stacking the Box, FanSided‘s Matt Verderame and Mark Carman, along with former NFL offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz, discuss what happens to the Baltimore Ravens when offensive coordinator Greg Roman becomes a head coach next season. Schwartz suggested Roman and Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton coming to Chicago (6:00).

Admittedly, it was more of a speculative thought than anything. Sure, the Bears are probably moving off Trubisky at the end of the year, but we can’t say the same for Chicago head coach Matt Nagy. The Bears won the NFC North only a year ago and this is just Nagy’s second season as an NFL head coach. But you do have to wonder what a Newton/Roman pairing could look like.

Newton has not had a clean bill of health in the last two seasons. His last two years with the Panthers ended early for him due to injury. He last played for the Panthers this year back in Week 2. Carolina hasn’t exactly thrived with Kyle Allen filling in for Newton, so Newton could return to the Panthers next season. But there is a chance that owner David Tepper has seen enough.

Roman is poised to be a first-time head coach next season. His Ravens’ plus-one offense has taken the league by storm with Lamar Jackson as his dual-threat playmaker at quarterback. Roman has always thrived coaching mobile quarterbacks, so a football marriage with Newton could be an interesting one. The former NFL MVP holds league records as a running quarterback.

The idea of Newton and Roman working together in Chicago does seem farfetched, but only because it’s hard to see the Bears moving off Nagy after just two seasons. Roman won’t be a coordinator anywhere else but Baltimore. His next move is as a head coach. He could work with someone like Newton, but it’s a tad unrealistic that this pairing will join up in Chicago at this time.

Here are a few other topics discussed on this week’s episode of Stacking the Box:

  • Schwartz: I was very wrong about the Ravens – 1:25
  • Verderame: Lamar might fail like RGIII or Kaepernick – 6:58
  • Gambling is going to put pressure on changing bad officiating – 15:06
  • Patriots offense will be why they don’t win a Super Bowl – 34:44

All this and more!
