The Chicago Bears signed Corey Levin off the Broncos practice squad today. What does this signing mean for Alex Bars’ possible playing time?

When the Chicago Bears placed Kyle Long on injured reserve earlier this year, a door opened for the possibility of Alex Bars possibly seeing some playing time. Bars has been promoted to the active roster from the practice squad but has yet to see any playing time.

Alex Bars is currently on the Bears depth chart as the third tackle behind Charles Leno and Cornelius Lucas. This is obviously after the Bobby Massie injury which means technically he is the fourth tackle on the depth chart. This is somewhat shocking to me. Even though Bars played some tackle during the preseason, he has always been a guard.

The depth chart is not necessarily a tell-all, but the new addition of Corey Levin has changed things even more. The Bears have been playing James Daniels as the left guard and Rashaad Coward at right guard. Behind them on the depth chart is Ted Larsen and now Corey Levin. Although Levin is clearly a depth move, it begs to wonder how they view Bars at the moment.

Would the team stick to their depth chart and promote Larsen or Levin if Coward were to be benched or injured? Personally, if truly healthy, I would prefer Bars be given a shot. Personally, I would prefer Bars to Coward at this point too. I have nothing against Levin, but Bars was to be drafted within the first three rounds before his ACL and MCL tear while playing for Notre Dame.

If Bars has truly healed from these injuries, then he should be able to see a shot before Levin. Levin is a former sixth-round pick of the Tennessee Titans. He was drafted in 2018 and played in all 16 games with one start for the Titans last season. Levin was waived by the Titans and claimed by the Denver Broncos. He has been on the Broncos practice squad until signed by the Bears today.

The fact that Bars is still ahead of Levin on the depth chart in terms of second string and third string, I am hopeful the coaches still view him as the asset I hope he can become.
