Free agent depth moves the Bears should make to fill Roquan Smith void
The Chicago Bears may have sustained another significant injury in their Thursday win over the Cowboys. Roquan Smith left the game with a chest injury and initial reports do not sound good. The team may need depth to finish out the season.
The Chicago Bears played dominant football versus the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night. Unfortunately, the team did not leave Soldier Field without a loss. What I mean by this is that the Bears lost a few players to injury and one of those injuries may be very significant. Rumors are swirling that Roquan Smith’s chest injury might be a significant pectoral injury and he may miss the rest of the season.
The Bears have already lost Danny Trevathan to an injury and have been lucky that Nick Kwiatkoski has stepped up in his absence. The Bears were doubly lucky with the performance of Kevin Pierre-Lewis. If Pierre-Lewis can continue to play the way he did in limited action versus the Cowboys, the Bears defense will be just fine while they wait for Danny Trevathan to get healthy.
The Bears do not have any inside linebackers on the practice squad. Can the team take the chance of going into Week 15 with only Pierre-Lewis, Joel Iyiegbuniwe and Josh Woods available to replace Roquan Smith?
Matt Nagy did not dismiss the idea that Trevathan might return for the Packers game. Trevathan has been out for quite some time now, yet the Bears never placed him on injured reserve in hopes he would return before the season ends. The thing is, Trevathan has not practiced in over a month and the likelihood he is healthy enough to play versus the Packers next week is likely slim.
If Smith is indeed too hurt to finish the season, the Bears are likely to place him on injured reserve in order to add another player to the 53-man roster before the matchup versus the Packers. Ryan Pace should consider adding one of these free agents as depth pieces.
